What is Vinyl?
Vinyl (Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC) is a versatile plastic. In flooring terms Vinyl is a hard-wearing floor covering that can come in sheet or tile form.
What are the key differences?
LVT is a higher quality product in tile form, our previous article explored this in more detail.
Sheet Vinyl is the most well-known form, also known as cushioned vinyl or flooring, and is commonly fitted to bathrooms, kitchens and hallways.
Linoleum is a different product although the applications are similar.
What should I look for?
There are a few key points to look at when you’re searching for a vinyl floor covering.
- Wear layer – This is the top part of the vinyl product and a thicker layer means a harder wearing product.
- R number – The anti-slip rating. R10 is the highest for domestic flooring with R11 being suitable for commercial use.
- Width available- Like carpets; sheet vinyl can be joined. It is therefore worth checking the available widths to ensure that joins are avoided, placed discreetly or keep the wastage to a minimum.
Any other points to consider?
As with many floor covering products, the subfloor is important when fitting sheet vinyl. This product is often great value for money and can come in some fantastic designs today offering style and luxury.
