The Challenge
When Mr. and Mrs. S purchased their dream home in Polegate, East Sussex, they were excited to make it their own. They invested in a high-end kitchen renovation, including a ceramic tiled floor, expecting it to be the centrepiece of their new space. However, their excitement quickly turned to frustration when, just six weeks after installation, the floor began to crack and fail.
For three months, they engaged in a back-and-forth battle with the kitchen company, trying to resolve the issue. The tiles were eventually removed, leaving them with an uneven and messy kitchen floor and a compromised subfloor. It was a stressful and disappointing experience that left them wary of hiring another contractor.
The Solution
Twenty months after the initial kitchen installation, theyreached out to Grimley Flooring, hoping for a solution that would finally allow them to enjoy their kitchen. Our team understood the emotional and financial toll the situation had taken on them and approached the project with the utmost care and professionalism.
Upon inspection, we discovered that the original company had applied adhesive directly to the chipboard subfloor, resulting in a significantly weakened structure. To avoid the costly and disruptive process of replacing the subfloor, we needed to proceed with caution.
Our Process
- Careful Removal: We began by meticulously removing the remaining tile adhesive, ensuring we did not further damage the chipboard subfloor.
- Reinforcement: To strengthen the subfloor, we installed a 9mm plywood underlayment. Each piece was hand-screwed to avoid compromising the already weakened chipboard.
- Smoothing: We applied a 3mm smoothing compound over the plywood to create a perfect, solid, and stable base for the new flooring.
- Installation: Finally, we installed Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) in a tile format with a grout effect, providing the client with a durable and aesthetically pleasing floor that perfectly complemented their kitchen.
The Outcome
After nearly two years of dealing with a compromised kitchen, Mr. and Mrs. S were overjoyed with the results. The new LVT floor not only looked stunning but also provided the durability and ease of maintenance they had hoped for from the start. They were finally able to enjoy their kitchen and felt a renewed sense of happiness and satisfaction in their home.
